What Do We Do?

Healthy Kids Healthy Communities (HKHC) Roosevelt County creates opportunities for healthy eating and physical activity for children and adults in Roosevelt County, NM.

Key Priorities

Schools

  • Conducting Healthy Kids 5210 and Eat Smart to Play Hard healthy habits initiatives

  • Supporting fruit and vegetable tastings

  • Building a new school garden at Brown Early

  • Childhood Center where 24 classes plant, maintain, harvest, and eat fresh produce

Food System

  • Promoting and marketing the Portales
    Farmers' Market on social media

  • Educating 2ªd graders to "Re-Think Your Drink" (i.e., more water and fewer sugary beverages)

  • Encouraging school cafeterias to promote and serve NM Grown foods when available

Built Environment

• Printing and distributing Walking Opportunities in Roosevelt County, a guide/map of local trails

Key Successes

Engaged community partners to construct a new garden at Brown Early Childhood Center where all preschool and kindergarten classes could participate.
